BR-HD50U ProHD VCR
|The companion model to the GY-HD100, this
HDV/DV spooler is designed to transfer video and audio data to a non-linear editing system. Optimized for use with a wide variety of existing systems and formats, this unit features switchable HDV and DV modes and analog outputs. You can also connect it to a plasma or LCD panels equipped with an HDMI connector and use it as a low-cost viewer. With its low cost and high flexibility, the BR-HD50 is ideal for any facility looking for a smooth upgrade path from standard definition to HD.
As the HDV format uses the same recording track pitch as Professional
DV, the BR-HD50 can record signals in either standard or high definition depending on the user's needs.
Multi-format output/Cross-converter function
A sophisticated cross-converter function enables output not only of 720p signals, but also 1080i, 480/576p and 480/576i signals. Plus, thanks to switchable HDV and DV recording mode functionality along with DVCAM playback, you'll have no problems adding this recorder/player to your existing editing system.
HDV international compatibility
Switch between HDV 60 Hz or 50 Hz base as required, allowing recording and playback of 720/25p and 576/50p in addition to 720/24p/30p and 480/60p. This makes it easy to work with internationally sourced material and transfer it to a non-linear system for editing and then archiving to tape. You can also record to Standard DV or Mini DV tape in either HDV 60 Hz or 50 Hz base format.
*Cannot be used as an HDV 60 Hz/50 Hz converter. The BR-HD50U can record and play back signals in both HDV 60 Hz and 50 Hz formats.
The BR-HD50U can record HDV format 720/30p/25p/24p, 480/60p or 576/50p video and DV format 480/60i and 480/24p video.
Standard DV/Mini DV compatible mechanism
Proven on Professional DV VCRs, this mechanism provides not only improved running stability, but also accommodates both Standard DV and Mini DV format cassettes without any adapter.
DVCAM™ playback capability (SD)
DVCAM™ recordings can be played back directly on the BR-HD50. This makes it easy to use DVCAM™ recordings as source material for editing.
Stable high picture quality
Auto error correction system
JVC has developed an auto error correction system that operates on a frame-by-frame basis to ensure accurate error compensation during playback. After optimally calibrating the playback RF waveform with a pre-filter circuit, the VCO (voltage control oscillator) control voltage is changed so that the data reading clock phase is shifted to the position where the error rate is lowest. The result is accurate, consistent suppression of block noise and reliable, professional-standard performance at all times.
During recording and playback, to reduce the block noise which is caused by dust adhering to the heads, our HDV/DV camcorder and recorders incorporate an advanced drum assembly with specially designed "sweeper" heads. These dummy heads sweep off any magnetic material dropped by the tape or any dust that may have entered from outside the unit.
The BR-HD50 is equipped with an all-in-one HDMI output for direct digital connection to the latest high-definition projector and LCD displays.
For compatibility with the widest range of editing systems, the BR-HD50 is equipped with an industry-standard RS-422A interface, allowing easy integration with high-grade NLE systems.
IEEE 1394 interface
For lossless dubbing and recording of both HD and SD programs, compressed HD (MPEG-2) or SD (DV) digital signals can be input or output to or from external devices such as a non-linear editing system. A front panel switch allows you to switch easily between SD and HD.
Versatile analog connections
In addition to IEEE 1394 input/output, the BR-HD50 is equipped with analog component (BNC) output connectors for HD and SD. Y/C input/output connectors (SD mode) and composite input/output (BNC) connectors (SD mode) are also available.
Large full counter
A big 8-digit LED display on the front panel displays time code, user bits and VTR status.
This indicator lights whenever audio signals are input. Also, it provides a convenient way to check for the presence of audio signals during tape playback.
High-speed time code search/blank search
The built-in time code generator provides preset, rec run and regen time codes. The DV 20x search function (100x max. in the FF or REW mode) and the HD 8.5x forward search function (6.5x in reverse), provides super-fast access to any desired point on the tape.
When a camcorder is connected to the BR-HD50 via the IEEE 1394 connector, the BR-HD50 will start recording 5 minutes before the tape in the camcorder ends. This enables continuous shooting for extended periods with no breaks in the recording.
Systematic, easy-to-understand menu screens simplify setting and operation procedures. Menu setting can be done using either the buttons on the front panel.
- Lock audio (16-bit, 48 kHz only)
- Time code reader/generator

The CU-VH1U is the world's first truly portable high definition player/recorder. It makes an ideal complement to JVC's HDV camcorder, the GY-HD100U. Multi-format playback and digital IEEE 1394 connectivity make this tiny VTR a must-have component of any high definition production or post production system.
Adheres to industry standard HDV format*
The HDV format is the revolutionary new standard for low bit rate HDTV recording and playback using MPEG2 compression and widely available "DV" cassette tape. Although HDTV material is not recorded in the DV format, HDV machines use the same inexpensive MiniDV tapes that are widely available. For this reason, JVC's CU-VH1U is able to function as a dual format recorder, adhering to HDV for high definition, as well as MiniDV for standard definition.
Wide range of playback options
For playback, the new CU-VH1U is extremely versatile. It will play back signals recorded in 720/30p (MPEG-2), 480/60p (MPEG-2) and 480/60i (DV). This includes any footage shot with either of JVC Pro's two HD camcorders -- the JY-HD10 or GY-HD100U. It includes up- and down-conversion so that HD recordings can be viewed on virtually any television or monitor. It displays 720/30p HD recordings for viewing on progressive 720/60p analog HD monitors, or converts 480/60p or 720/30p signals to 1080/60i HD. The player/recorder also down-converts to 480/60p or 480/60i for playback on progressive or NTSC monitors. 16:9 HD, SD or DV footage can be played in 16:9 or 4:3 letterbox modes. All material is output on component analog connectors and down-converted or NTSC material is available on the S-Video or composite outputs. Note: the CU-VH1 will not display or output (through analog connectors) HDV recordings made in the 24p mode. It will record IEEE-1394 signals recorded in the HDV 24p mode, and play them back through the IEEE-1394 connector.
Versatile recording options
The CU-VH1U's recording capabilities include digital-to-digital HD, SD and DV recording to and from video equipment and PCs. Its IEEE-1394 interface allows digital-to-digital dubbing between the CU-VH1 and HD cameras and decks (D-VHS). The IEEE-1394 connection also allows HD and SD MPEG-2 material to be transferred between the CU-VH1 and a PC for playback or non-linear MPEG-2 editing. DV recordings and digital stills are transferred through IEEE-1394 as well.
Built-in digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital conversion allows easy dubbing between digital and analog sources. S-Video, composite and audio connectors function as both inputs and outputs, allowing HD/SD or DV sources to be dubbed from the CU-VH1U to an NTSC deck or analog material dubbed from an NTSC source onto Mini DV in the CU-VH1. Component video outputs allow dubbing from the CU-VH1U to a professional deck.
Convenient monitoring in the field
Footage can be viewed on the CU-VH1U's built-in 3.5-inch, 240,000 pixel high resolution LCD monitor. There's a brightness control, a speaker, and the monitor folds flat into the top of the unit when not in use.
Advanced SD memory card capabilities
The CU-VH1U can capture progressive HD, SD and DV 1280 x 720 JPEG stills and save them to a Memory card. Images stored on SD Cards or MultiMediaCards (MMC) can be viewed individually or automatically as a slide show. In addition, a Digital Print Order Format (DPOF) request allows the user to easily select images and how many of each for automatic printing. It's also possible to drag-and-drop digital stills or other content on the memory card to a PC with the USB or IEEE-1394 connection.
To easily access specific scenes, thumbnail images of what is shot on tape can be automatically stored on a memory card while shooting or manually during playback. In addition, tape time code or day and date subcode can be displayed on screen.
Rugged construction for demanding field use
To ensure that the CU-VH1U holds up to demanding field use, BNC connectors (with supplied RCA adapters), S-Video, composite and audio inputs/outputs and iLink IEEE 1394 and USB inputs/outputs are protected by metal guards and a rugged cover. The SD memory card/MultiMediaCard slot, microphone jack and headphone jack are similarly protected.
AC/DC Power options
The CU-VH1U can use the same battery as the JVC GY-HD100U high definition camcorder. The included AC power supply charges these batteries. The included battery (BN-V416U) on a full charge lasts up to 1.5 hours. An available optional battery (BN-V428U) provides power for up to two hours, 50 minutes.
